The Short:
- Vision: Celedu aims to help the next billion people at the bottom of the pyramid by increasing their living standards through education and literacy
- Mission: To provide a mobile platform for literacy and language education through:
- a game interface to distribute ReadingWise/DevAlt language-learning content
- a scalable platform to other educational applications
- an initial launch in India
The Long: Celedu (Cellular + Education) aims to tackle the most pressing problems in developing and underdeveloped parts of the world, using the most pervasive solutions for communication and outreach in these regions today. Basic literacy is an issue that affects over 35 million people in India, and billions worldwide. At Celedu, we are developing a solution with our partner Development Alternatives (DevAlt) using mobile technology to reach out to this segment of population. Celedu provides a mobile platform for literacy and language education. The initial application is based on the proven Tara Akshar model with an added game interface to help learning. The platform is flexible and adaptable for implementation in other language programs worldwide. Celedu is going to deploy its service to rural villages, utilizing a community-learning model: as mobile penetration is low rather than trying to penetrate each individual’s phone with a learning application, we will leverage their village community structure. For that we will need to use NGO’s community organizer at first, then create our own agent network as long as mobile development levels (network and phone) allows users to download the application to their phones directly from the Operators’ portals.
